This just in I was just approved to be the leader of a new Kelby Photowalk for Houston. This will be my second time to do a Kelby Photowalk. The first walk was in the Lower Westheimer \ Montrose area in Houston. It was early Saturday morning a couple of years ago. I was wait listed last year so I wasn’t able to attend. Frankly, I was waitlisted this year as well so I decided to lead my own walk.
Let’s backup a few steps, pardon the pun, and I’ll explain a few details. Scott Kelby is the president of NAPP, the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. He owns KelbyOne which provides some of the best online photographic I’ve seen. Although there are prizes, this is a fun walk and a good opportunity to get to know some other photographers and hone one’s photographic skills. The photowalk is free; however, donations are accepted to benefit the Springs of Hope orphanage in Kenya. You can donate at the link below: https://www.generosity.com/community-fundraising/let-s-transform-orphans-lives-together-wwpw2017
My walk will center around the downtown Houston sports venues. Although it may be quiet, there won’t be any games on Saturday morning October 7, the Houston Astros will be playing Thursday and Friday in the American League Division Series. We’ll take a vote to decide whether to go to BBVA stadium, just a few blocks away, or head straight down to Discovery Green and then on to Toyota Center, the home of the Houston Rockets. Along the way walkers can visit some of the other Houston landmarks and icons.
I’ll post some of my favorite pictures after the walk. Below are the current details.
- 7:30am(ish) – Optional Pre-Walk coffee & breakfast at Ahh, Coffee, 2018-A Rusk St., near BBVA Stadium. 832-968-3433.
- 9:00pm – Official Gathering, Meet at the Belltower at Minute Maid Park
This photowalk is for all skill levels.
The photowalk will begin at Minute Maid Park and walk to Toyota Center. Along the way we’ll take exterior shots of the grounds at Minute Maid, BBVA Stadium (optional) pass Annunciation Catholic Church, Graffiti walls, Discovery Green, The Hilton Americas, Marriott Marquis and The George R Brown Convention Center. There will be opportunities to photograph architecture, street photography and general people watching in Houston’s mini-Central Park. This is a short walk, less than a mile each way. On the way back, we’ll take Austin St. to see more of downtown.
Note, there may be a lot of buzz going on downtown the week of the photowalk because the Astros will be in the middle of the AL Division Series. Oct 7 is NOT scheduled to be a game day.
- 11:00am, or so – Please join the group for a casual lunch at Jackson Street BBQ behind Minute Maid Park to share your favorite images.
This will be a daytime walk so you’ll want to bring along something to drink.
Money – At this time Saturday morning I think you should be able to park on the street but you may choose to park in a pay lot but you shouldn’t have to pay more than $10, prices vary. If you plan to photograph people along the way you may want to bring a few dollars to tip them. There’s a small café in Discovery Green if you want a drink or something. Also bring money for lunch.
What to bring – Comfortable walking shoes, Camera, memory cards and your favorite lenses in your camera bag. Tripods are optional. Wide angle lenses are great for landscapes, long lenses will be great for zooming in and capturing the action in Discovery Green. Remember you’re going to be carrying your equipment a couple of miles, so don’t bring your full lens collection.
